Building for Portland’s Outdoor-Indoor Lifestyle

Building for Portland's Outdoor-Indoor Lifestyle

Portland gets more than 40 inches of rain a year, but homeowners still want outdoor spaces they can use well beyond summer. Most of the outdoor fireplace projects we build in Portland are part of a larger outdoor living area — covered patios, pergolas, and sometimes full outdoor kitchens. The fireplace becomes the focal point of the space. Homeowners want to enjoy these areas in October and March, not just July, which means the construction has to be designed for Portland’s climate from the start.

The biggest challenge with outdoor masonry fireplaces in Portland isn’t the design itself. It’s making sure the materials and foundation can handle the environment. Portland’s wet winters put exterior brick through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every season. A brick that performs fine indoors can crack and spall outdoors within a few years if it isn’t rated for severe weather exposure. On top of that, the clay soils common throughout the Willamette Valley expand and shift when saturated, which, in Portland, is much of the year.

Note for homeowners: Portland Permitting & Development requires a building permit for masonry fireplace and chimney construction. When Multnomah County issues seasonal wood-burning restrictions because of air quality, outdoor wood-burning fireplaces are subject to the same restrictions as indoor fireplaces. Wood-fired cooking remains exempt.

Foundation to Flue — How We Build Outdoor Fireplaces in Portland

Foundation to Flue — How We Build Outdoor Fireplaces in Portland

Every outdoor masonry fireplace starts with the foundation. We excavate below frost depth and pour a reinforced concrete footing sized to support the full weight of the masonry structure above it. With Portland’s clay-heavy soils and long wet season, this is not an area where shortcuts hold up.

For the exterior brickwork, we use ASTM C 216 Grade SW (Severe Weathering) brick. That SW rating means the brick is specifically tested to withstand high moisture exposure and repeated freeze-thaw cycling without spalling. It’s the right specification for Portland’s outdoor exposure and aligns with masonry requirements for freeze-thaw durability in severe weather conditions. Using MW or NW grade brick outdoors in this environment usually becomes a visible problem within the first few winters.

Inside the firebox, we install refractory firebrick set in high-temperature mortar. Mortar joints inside the firebox are kept between 1/16 and 1/8 inch, while the exterior masonry is laid with Type S mortar for added durability in wet, ground-adjacent conditions.

We also size and position the chimney to meet IRC R1003.9 clearance requirements, extending at least 3 feet above the roof penetration point and at least 2 feet higher than any adjacent roof or structure within 10 horizontal feet. If the covered patio design requires additional coordination, we address those clearances during the planning phase.

A Fire Feature Built for Portland’s Climate

Completed outdoor fireplace with patio context

The finished fireplace is built to the same standard as the masonry fireplaces we install inside Portland homes: proper footing support, climate-rated materials, and a code-compliant chimney system. It’s designed to handle Portland’s rainfall, moisture exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles without the mortar deteriorating or the brick breaking down prematurely.

What doesn’t last in this climate is an outdoor fireplace built with indoor-rated brick or undersized footings. That’s the kind of project that ends up needing major repairs or a rebuild within a few years.
