Chimney Swifts: How Portland Chimney & Masonry Inc. Can Help
Chimney Swifts in Your Home
Have you noticed birds entering your chimney or heard chirping sounds from within your home? If so, you may have Chimney Swifts. These birds are active from spring through early fall, which is their mating season.
Understanding Chimney Swifts
Chimney Swifts begin their mating season in late spring, continuing through early fall. Originally, they roosted in old-growth trees but have adapted to nesting in chimneys. Unlike most birds, Chimney Swifts cannot perch; instead, they cling vertically to walls due to their unique foot structure. Their nests are cup-shaped and adhered to surfaces with their saliva, which hardens like concrete. During the mating season, these birds build their nests, and once the eggs hatch, the young swifts practice flight by clinging to the chimney walls and vigorously flapping their wings, which can be quite noisy.
Protection and Conservation
Chimney Swifts are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, meaning their nests cannot be disturbed during the nesting season. While they are temporary residents, you can enjoy observing these fascinating creatures. The Chapman School in NW Portland even has a dedicated chimney for Chimney Swifts, attracting thousands of birds each year and offering a spectacular aerial show.
Creating Alternative Homes
If you wish to continue hosting Chimney Swifts, consider installing a Chimney Swift tower as an alternative home. Various options are available online. Either way, once the Chimney Swifts have left in the Fall, it’s essential to have your chimney inspected and cleaned. If you don’t want your visitors to return to your chimney, we would recommend installing a chimney cap to prevent future nesting.
