The Problem
Portland Chimney Inc. serviced this fireplace system with a Level 2 inspection. The findings per the Level 2 inspection showed the firebox had major cracks in the floor and back wall. Fireplace was not in good condition for continued use. The client also needed a new screen to cover when embers would crackle out during a fire.
Products Used
The firebox measurements are 44″ Wide x 28″ Tall. Screen was custom made 44″ Wide x 32″ Tall.
Materials used : Harbison Walker International Refractory Clippers, Green Partch 421, Chamber Safe.
Each brick numbered and cut to fit in perfectly using a masonry saw in a herringbone design.
Our senior mason personally put his style into the fireplace.
For our customer’s request of a fireplace screen – we found a custom “L” and had our welder make the screen to have this.
How We Did It
We used Zip poles to plastic off the area from the fireplace to the closest access door. We also used corrugated boards to protect the floor from scratching.
Using demolition rotary hammer, we removed the existing fireplace – careful not to chip the existing hearth and surround.
We run vacuums to catch any dust and debris to reduce dust as much as possible.
Carrying out the demolition with buckets, we then recycle the bricks in the green recycling dump.
For the rebuild portion – we set out out a cutting station with the masonry saw and layout the herringbone form using the firebox dimensions.
We carefully cut each brick and number them.
We then install each piece like a puzzle inside the firebox. The mason must be specialized in this as you must lay the brick and set it – you cannot move the bricks or they will fall.
Clean up is easy as the mason cleans as he goes.
